چکیده

Generating droplets of uniform volume is essential for the digital microfluidics systems, which use droplets as basic fluidic units. Recently we have shown that high uniformity (±%2) can be achieved by new firing sequence [1]. We have also confirmed accurate on-chip capacitive measurement of droplet volumes [1,2]. In the current paper, we develop feedback control system to defeat the random uncertainties and further improve the uniformity. Furthermore, the feedback allows generation of user-subscribed droplet volumes within a range determined by the hardware.

All-electronic droplet generation on-chip with real-time feedback control for EWOD digital microfluidics.

Electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) actuation enables digital (or droplet) microfluidics where small packets of liquids are manipulated on a two-dimensional surface. Due to its mechanical simplicity and low energy consumption, EWOD holds particular promise for portable systems. To improve volume precision of the droplets, which is desired for quantitative applications such as biochemical assays...

Programmable large area digital microfluidic array with integrated droplet sensing for bioassays.

We describe a new device concept for digital microfluidics, based on an active matrix electrowetting on dielectric (AM-EWOD) device. A conventional EWOD device is limited by the number of electrical connections that can be made practically, which restricts the number and type of droplet operations. In an AM-EWOD, the patterned electrodes of a conventional EWOD device are replaced by a thin film...

Fluorinated Superhydrophobic Surfaces for Digital Microfluidic Devices with Electrowetting on Dielectric and Magnetic Actuation

Digital microfluidics (DMF) is a popular alternative to traditional in-channel microfluidics, which allows precise control of individual droplets. Most commonly used droplet manipulation methods for DMF are electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) and magnetic actuation. Both methods require high surface hydrophobicity to facilitate droplet movement, and often superhydrophobic surfaces are used to f...

Calculation of DEP and EWOD Forces for Application in Digital Microfluidics

Two primary methods for electrostatically actuating microdroplets in channels currently exist: dielectrophoresis (DEP) for electrically insulating fluids and electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) for conducting fluids. In each case, a transverse electric field is used to create an electrostatic pressure, giving rise to the transport of individual liquid slugs. This paper examines the nature of th...

Fluidic conduits for highly efficient purification of target species in EWOD-driven droplet microfluidics.

Due to the lack of continuous flows that would wash unwanted specifies and impurities off from a target location, droplet microfluidics commonly employs a long serial dilution process to purify target species. In this work, we achieve high-purity separation for the case of electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) based droplet microfluidics by introducing a "fluidic conduit" between a sample droplet...
